The R-value reports the energy-efficiency of the glass the higher the number. This is different than R-value that would be used to determine the energy efficiency of just the window pane, thus a window with a U-value of 1 is more energy efficient than an window with a U-value of 5. Always check with the building department when choosing a door or window. Simply put, consumers will save more than 30 on energy bills. U-values are used to determine the insulating efficiency of the window and all of its components. Having an R-value of 5 means that these windows have reduced heat loss from a U-factor of 0.3 to 0.2. Keep in mind that this is the opposite for U-values. When original frames and trim are in good shape, you can leave them in place, saving time and disruption.

Extremely energy efficient, it gives you a wide array of decorative and performance options.
ANDERSEN WINDOWS R VALUE SERIES
Materials that are very inefficient are listed out with low R-values such as R-1, where more energy efficient materials are listed out at R-5. Year after year, the Andersen 400 Series tilt-wash window is our best-selling double-hung window and for good reason. Materials with higher R-values provide better insulation and are able to resist heat more than something with a low R-Value. The United States government created regulations around energy efficient building materials and mandated that values be added to materials for more efficient use of natural resources. For product performance ratings, see the Technical Documents. To calculate the R-Value, you must first determine the U-Factor of your window or patio door unit. The higher the R-Value rating, the more energy efficient the unit is. R-value is used to define the energy efficiency of a particular building material and originally was developed for measuring the thermal performance of insulation. The R-Value is the thermal resistance of the window or patio door glass to heat flow.

Both of these terms, R-value and U-value, are commonplace terms in the remodeling and construction industry and are used to define how energy efficient a material is.
